Matte Paintings

Can someone please explain to me what a matte painting is? I see them everywhere but i dont get what it is. Is it just like a photomanip painting or am i way off? lmaoo

I believe it's just digi-painting. But the whole image is NOT from scratch. But i could be wrong ;)

its a mixture of pictures and painting to produce a photo-realistic image, usually a background for a scene in a movie. this is very effective and is extremely hard to master.
I'm starting to learn it, im wanting to be a matte painter. Dylan cole would be a great example of a matte painter.

i found it on my own, and yeah, its amazing. he's got a MASSIVE list of big name companies that he's done work for. on really big movies too. wow.

yea, hes a big inspiration. Matte painting is a big business in the graphics industry.

yeah apparently. At my work we have an in house graphics designer so he's been explaining a lot to me. and showing me a lot.
