when i use liquify it only goes clockwise, is there any way to switch it to anti-clockwise and then alternatly switch them back and forth?

wtf? clockwise?.. are you sure you have the thing on the most upper setting (the finger).. and not the black whole looking thing? xD

If you're using the "Twirl Clockwise" tool, or whatever it's called... I would assume that it won't go anti-clockwise. :P

But the normal liquify tool, the one right at the top on the right of the liquify window, doesn't twirl or anything like that o___o

so no-one uses the liquify tool but the smudge tool in the liquify filter?

well I use both.. in my last ABC LP I used the smudge tool first to get the shapes and later the clockwise tool to get some nice twirls in thre :)
